A Constitutional Crisis Could Be Coming

The November 3rd election has the potential to be one of the most unusual in our nation’s history, with possible twists and turns that could make Florida's "hanging chads" in 2000 seem quaint. This presentation will be a sober, nonpartisan review of specific possibilities that few of us may have considered, but of which we should be aware.

By now, many you have likely seen or heard HBS Professor Michael Porter and Katherine Gehl detail systemic problems in the US political system. They recently published The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy. Inspired in part by these efforts, a small group from the HBS Club of New York formed a non-partisan organization, Reform Elections Now (“REN”), to educate and engage business leaders on the specific problems and potential solutions.

REN has produced numerous white papers and presented them to various audiences, including several other HBS Clubs. Based on the traditional intrigue surrounding Florida voting, they have offered to provide us with an interesting take on what could happen over the coming months. It is sure to be provocative, and hopefully enjoyable!

The session will be led by one of REN’s founders, Peter Siris (MBA 1968). When not focusing on federal and state election systems, Peter specializes in Chinese companies as an investment manager and venture capitalist. He is also an author of books and columns.
