Entrepreneurship is the New Black

How business is helping inmates transition from prison to freedom

Join Tracey Mourning for a dynamic discussion on how entrepreneurship is changing the lives of former prison inmates. We'll highlight how LEAP (Ladies Empowerment and Action Program) is helping inmates find success through entrepreneurship and mentorship. Several former inmates (and LEAP graduates) will join the program's founders for an enlightening evening that's not your usual alumni affair. You’ll find that it’s never too late for a fresh start! Perhaps you too can make a difference in someone’s life. We hope to see you there for this terrific program.

About LEAP

Ladies Empowerment and Action Program (LEAP) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization offering an innovative inside prison re-entry, and post release support program. The program is designed to stimulate and empower incarcerated women to make positive life changes through a multi-disciplinary approach including entrepreneurship training, education and mentorship.

Our goal is to prepare participants (LEAPers) to start their own business or become successfully employed. By empowering these women to live transformed lives, recidivism can be reduced significantly in the female adult prison population. Florida’s recidivism rate is published at 28%. LEAP’s recidivism rate to-date is less than 2%.

LEAP has graduated 75 LEAPers, 6 of whom will be released shortly. Of the 69 that have re-entered society, 8 have started their own micro-enterprises, 3 are employed and are working towards their own business, 29 are employed, 8 are employed while attending school, 7 are attending school, 1 returned to prison (violated probation) and the remaining 9 are looking for jobs. LEAP is making a difference.
