New World Symphony Concert, Tour and Reception:
Mahler's Symphony No. 6, the "Tragic"

Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 2:00pm

New World Symphony - 500 17th St, Miami Beach, Florida

We invite you to a private tour of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center followed by a champagne toast in the rooftop garden following the New World Symphony's performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 6, the "Tragic." The hammer blows in the final movement of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony are some of the most visceral and cathartic events to be found in music. Moments like these – of shock, awe and spectacle – are the reason we gather at the symphony and experience the thrill of live music together.

Gustav Mahler—who said “a symphony must be like the world—it must contain everything”—created a vast panorama of life’s deepest emotions in his Sixth Symphony. Nicknamed the “Tragic,” it unflinchingly examines and foreshadows Mahler’s own life with Austrian marches, religious chorales, romantic melodies and the final hammer blows of fate. Requiring a massive Mahler-sized orchestra under the direction of conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the Sixth Symphony is a must-see experience for classical music aficionados.

The New World Symphony prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. Since its co-founding in 1987 by Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, NWS has helped launch the careers of more than 1,150 alumni worldwide.
